The handwoven Jala Basket is designed to be placed on the floor or on a low shelf for functional easy-access storage in any room. Styling this basket in your home will add warmth, visual interest and an element of story-telling thanks to its beautiful organic shape and the texture of natural woven palm fibre.
The inspiration came for this piece came from a seeing a large, low toy tub in a family member's home. We loved how practical their basket was for children to access and easily tidy their toys and decided to reinvent one with our talented palm fibre artisans. Not only for toys, the wide diameter and firm structure of the Jala basket is ideal to hold a couple of small cushions or blankets in the living room, as a catch-all in an entryway for shoes and bags, and for storing firewood or kindling. Your furry family family member might even like it as a bed with a soft cushion added.
Handmade by fair trade artisans in a village community of Bangladesh, each Jala Basket is assembled by bundling kaisa grass; wrapping them in fine strips of date palm fibre and coiling and weaving them into shape. The women who make these pieces work from home or in communal areas of their village and a genuine Fair Trade partnership ensures they are paid fairly for their time and skills, among many other benefits.
Looking to match the Jala with other practical baskets from our palm fibre collection for a cohesive styling story in your home? Try the the taller Mira Baskets, or the smaller Dhali Baskets and Buna Baskets.
